What Is The AIA Sandcastle Festival?
Hosted annually by the American Institute of Architects Houston Chapter, the AIA Sandcastle Competition is more than a typical beach event. Teams compete for the prestigious Golden Bucket Award, along with awards for best traditional sandcastle, tallest structure, best use of color, and more.
Judges and beachgoers alike admire the skill and artistic design that go into each build. The festival draws over 20,000 spectators and spans a vast stretch of East Beach, one of Galveston’s most popular shorelines.

Day One: Competition Day

Expect to see dozens of teams hard at work, using only sand, water, and a few simple tools to bring elaborate designs to life. The weather in Galveston in late August is typically hot and humid, with average highs ranging from the upper 80s to the low 90s. Bring sunscreen, water, and comfortable beachwear, and prepare for a full day in the sun. Food trucks, vendors, and restroom facilities are available on-site. Day Two: Bonus Viewing Day
Although the official competition ends on Saturday, many of the sand sculptures remain in place through Sunday. This extra day gives visitors another chance to admire the creations, especially helpful if you missed the main event or want to return for photos when the beach is less crowded.
